  • Welcome to The Office in My Head

Well, since you’re here, I guess I should introduce myself.

I’m E.B. Valentine, an indie author with a love for dark romance, paranormal romance, complicated relationships, and characters who probably shouldn’t be left unsupervised.

I write about obsession, love, power, danger, and people who don’t always make the best decisions. Some of my characters are morally gray. Some passed morally gray a long time ago and haven’t looked back.

And yes, I know some of these people need therapy.

I’m the one who created them. Trust me, I’m aware.

But here’s something you might not expect from somebody who writes the kind of stories I do.

I have a sense of humor.

Sometimes it’s sarcastic, sometimes it’s a little inappropriate, and sometimes it’s dark enough that I probably shouldn’t laugh out loud. But I do.

And that’s part of why I created this little corner of my website.

See, I spend a ridiculous amount of time in my head. I’m usually working on more than one story, somebody is always demanding my attention, and half the time a character from one book is interrupting me while I’m trying to write another.

So somewhere along the way, I started calling it The Office in My Head.

And apparently, once you give something a name, everybody assumes they work there.

    Including my dogs.

    And my reptiles.

Don’t ask me how we got here. I’m still trying to figure that out myself.

Anyway, this blog is where I plan to share a little bit of everything. Book news, upcoming releases, behind-the-scenes moments, sneak peeks, things I’ve learned along the way as an indie author, and whatever else I feel like talking about.

I want you to get to know me beyond the books, too. Not necessarily every detail of my personal life, because a woman is entitled to a little privacy, but enough to know there’s an actual person behind all these fictional people with questionable morals.

    Speaking of questionable morals…

Who gave My’Kael access to the mailing list?

    Seriously.

I was just looking at something, and why is there a draft email welcoming readers that starts with, “I’ve taken the liberty of learning your routines”?

    MY’KAEL.

    Sir.

You cannot introduce yourself to strangers like that.

I don’t care how polite you think it sounds. That’s not a welcome email. That’s the beginning of a police report.

And Rudolph, I know you’re involved somehow, so don’t even start.

    Hold on a minute.

    LILI!

    Where is Human Resources?

    Of course. Asleep.

For those of you who don’t know, Lili is one of my dogs and apparently the head of Human Resources around here. I say apparently because she’s usually either cuddling somebody or minding everybody’s business, and I have yet to see her resolve a single workplace complaint.

Baby Girl is Head of Security, which sounds impressive until you realize she spends most of her shift sleeping in the doorway.

And before anybody asks why I hired them, I didn’t.

    They appointed themselves.

Hennessy, my crested gecko, is probably watching all of this happen without blinking. That little man sees everything and says absolutely nothing.

Honestly, he’s probably the smartest employee we have.

    Anyway, where was I?

    Right. The blog.

This is supposed to be a place where we can have a little fun. I love the darker side of romance, and I’m not interested in pretending my characters are better behaved than they are. But I also don’t take myself so seriously that I can’t laugh at the absolute foolishness that comes with having this many imaginary people living rent-free in my head.

Some days we’ll talk about books. Some days I’ll share what I’m working on. There might be a character interview, an office memo, or a random thought that I decided deserved more than a Facebook post.

And some days I might come here just to fuss about somebody who isn’t real.

    That’s perfectly normal.

At least that’s what I’m going with.

I also want this to be a place where readers feel comfortable talking to me. Tell me what you’re reading, which characters you love, which ones you can’t stand, or which one needs to be dragged into my office for a disciplinary meeting.

Just know I cannot promise that the characters will agree with your assessment.

    They barely listen to me.

So whether you’ve already read one of my books, you’ve been following me on social media, or you just stumbled across this website wondering what kind of woman writes these stories, welcome.

    I’m glad you’re here.

Pull up a chair, make yourself comfortable, and feel free to look around.

Just watch where you step. Baby Girl is probably asleep in the doorway, Lili is unavailable for comment, and I still need to find out who gave My’Kael the mailing list password.

And if anybody sees Rudolph, tell her I want a word.

Author, reluctant office manager, and the only person here who apparently understands the concept of a job description.
